What Does a Commercial Cleaning Company Do on the First Visit?

You signed a contract with a commercial cleaning company. Now what? If you've never outsourced cleaning before, the first visit can feel uncertain. Here's exactly what happens — from the walkthrough to the first clean to the follow-up — so you know what to expect and how to evaluate the service.

Step 1: The Pre-Cleaning Walkthrough

Before the first cleaning, a good company will do a walkthrough of your facility — either in person or virtually. This is when they:

  • Measure the space and note the layout
  • Identify floor types (carpet, tile, concrete, hardwood) and the appropriate cleaning methods for each
  • Count restrooms, break rooms, and high-traffic areas
  • Ask about your priorities, concerns, and problem areas
  • Discuss scheduling — when should they arrive, when must they be done?
  • Review access procedures — keys, alarm codes, parking

Step 2: The First Cleaning (Usually a "Deep Clean")

The first visit is almost always more thorough than a regular maintenance clean. This is because the crew is bringing your facility up to baseline. Expect:

  • Longer service time — the first clean takes 1.5–2x longer than a regular visit
  • Edge-to-edge cleaning — behind furniture, under desks, inside cabinets that are normally surface-cleaned
  • Built-up grime removal — restroom grout, kitchen appliance exteriors, window tracks, baseboards
  • Restocking and setup — the crew will set up soap dispensers, paper towel holders, and trash liners as part of their routine

Step 3: The Follow-Up Check-In

A professional company will contact you within 24–48 hours after the first cleaning to ask:

  • Were you satisfied with the first clean?
  • Was anything missed or not up to your expectations?
  • Do you want to adjust anything in the scope or schedule?

If a company doesn't follow up after the first cleaning, that tells you something about their attention to client relationships.

Step 4: Settling Into the Routine

After 2–3 visits, the crew learns your space. They know which trash cans fill fastest, which restroom gets the heaviest use, and where dust accumulates. The cleaning gets faster and more consistent because they're not discovering your facility — they know it. This is why companies that assign dedicated crews to each account deliver better results than ones that rotate random workers.

Red Flag: No Walkthrough Before the First Visit

If a cleaning company shows up on day one without ever having seen your space, that means they didn't do a walkthrough. They're guessing — about scope, time, supplies, and equipment. That's not how professional companies operate.
