Why Hiring an Insured and Bonded Cleaning Company Matters for Your Business
Every cleaning company says they're "licensed, bonded, and insured." But what does that actually mean for you as a client? And what happens if you hire a company that isn't — and something goes wrong?
What Each One Means
- Licensed means the company is legally registered to operate as a business in the state of Michigan. It means they file taxes, have an EIN, and can be held accountable as a legal entity.
- Bonded means the company has purchased a surety bond — essentially a financial guarantee that protects you if the company fails to fulfill its obligations or if an employee steals from your facility. You can file a claim against the bond for restitution.
- Insured means the company carries general liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. General liability covers property damage — if a cleaner breaks your glass door or floods a restroom, their insurance pays. Workers' comp covers injuries — if a cleaner falls on your wet floor, their insurance pays the medical bills, not yours.
What Happens Without Insurance
If an uninsured cleaner damages your property, you pay. If an uninsured cleaner is injured in your building, you could be held liable for their medical costs. If an unbonded employee steals from your office, you have no guaranteed path to recovery. These aren't hypothetical risks — they're the exact scenarios insurance and bonding exist to prevent.
How to Verify
- Ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) — any legitimate company will provide this on request, usually within 24 hours
- Check that the COI is current — expired insurance is the same as no insurance
- Verify workers' comp coverage separately — some companies carry liability but skip workers' comp to save money
- Ask about coverage amounts — $1M general liability is standard for commercial cleaning
